The above drawings are those of my many and varying students who have attended my courses, whether on location or at pre-arranged venues. Please enjoy.
Instead of courses, in future I am offering lessons. This means that people can join the lessons at any time. What will vary are the days and times of lessons. I have re-worked it to allow for individual tutelage and also group teaching.
For drawing, I aim to have a maximum of three in each lesson. This allows me the time to concentrate on each person’s individual needs. It also allows for either group activity (say a still life) or individual personal ‘projects’. Please click HERE to read the terms and conditions.
Sculpting will revolve around individual tutelage or a maximum of two people modelling at the same time owing to space requirements and the use of materials and equipment. Please click HERE to read the terms and conditions.
Individual tutelage is £30.00 an hour, whilst group tutelage is £15.00 an hour per person. Sessions can be in the morning, 1000 - 1300 or in the afternoon, 1330 – 1630, or both. A teaching session is a minimum of 3 hours.
Days available for group sessions are Mondays, Tuesdays (both mornings and/or afternoons) and Saturday mornings. Those seeking individual tutelage should contact me to discuss the best possible arrangement. People can start with immediate effect. Lessons are open to all ages and abilities.
All participants will be required to pay for four lessons up front prior to attendance of each block. Those attending for the first time may come to the first lesson as a ‘taster session’, bringing cash to pay for the one session. Thereafter, if they wish to proceed, they will be required to pay for four sessions up front. People can start with immediate effect.
Please click HERE to read the terms and conditions if you would like to proceed.
Field Trips to Africa
I am currently exploring the possibility of taking field trips out to Africa for a group of up to 6 people which would not only be a truly amazing opportunity to see and experience some wonderful aspects of Africa, but also to sketch, draw and sculpt on sight in the bush, animals in their wild habitat. More on this later
Please note that these courses are for people of all abilities, whether new to art or anyone wishing to re-engage with their inner passion. We all need a new space from time to time in which to explore ourselves and our motivations.
Online courses by Skype - I am currently putting together a course that can be run by Skype - so for those of you who live many miles away, you can now participate. That will be an exciting adventure! More on that later.
Comments made by students who have attended or are attending my courses.
" I am so pleased with what I have produced. Everybody loves it and I have been asked to do a number of commissions. It's really exciting!"
"Sculpting with James has become one of the highlights of my week.
He has patiently taught me to observe and to use my intuition when moulding and carving.
Not only has this helped me capture the form, but also the life and essence of my adoring and compliant sitter. She is, of course, our aging family Labrador, Jessie.
The sessions are intense and James injects some fun into them by interspersing them with discussions ranging from the works of famous artists to philosophy. This is all washed down with plenty of tea and biscuits, the latter often finding their way to the lovely model.
James is a kind, patient and natural teacher."
"I am really enjoying this. I am trying out things I never imagined could be used for drawing. Using these new concepts and ideas has been a real eye opener".
"Having not received any art tuition since childhood, I came away from my first 'Maberly art class' on cloud nine, inspired and full of confidence. James is a wonderful teacher. He knows exactly when to hold back and when to step in."
"I thoroughly enjoyed my day with you. Particularly helpful and deepening were your observations of my relationship with the paper and the charcoal - how you made me stop and look in different ways, drew my attention to what I was doing and suggested - just enough - how to improve. Having given your insight - so clearly and encouragingly - you then left me to play, and to put into practice the guidance you’d offered. I felt truly supported in my efforts, picked up when I felt I’d fallen, and encouraged to develop on my own once i felt safer again. You are a gifted teacher, as well as a stunningly lively artist. Thank you so much for your attention, freedom of spirit and generosity of heart. I look forward to taking it further."
"I found the course work you gave me and your expert guidance took me to levels I had not yet attempted, particularly in the area of drawing on rather larger mediums....That I was in some small way able to achieve this gave me some much needed confidence in the drawing of animals either resting or with movement."
